This lab's work is to build the environments that form, test, and integrate the newest arrivals to our cities as trustworthy fellow citizens. No single discipline can do that alone.
We are always looking for people who know more than we do, but care just as much about the outcome.
This is the urban design studio I built at the New York Department of City Planning, standing under the waterfall wall of Paley Park with their sketchbooks out — because I insisted that everybody sketch. Drawing is how a designer learns to see, and seeing together is how a studio becomes more than the sum of its people. CivicVirtue.ai is that studio’s successor. The sketchbooks are simulations now, and the public space we are studying is a city for machine agents. The attitude has not changed: we meet unfathomable complexity with unshakable curiosity. Think hard, look hard, draw what you see, compare notebooks.
